Leon Panetta is an American politician and lawyer who served as the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency from 2009 to 2011 and as the Secretary of Defense from 2011 to 2013. He was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1977 to 1993, representing California's 16th congressional district. Panetta was born in Monterey, California, on June 28, 1938. He graduated from Monterey High School in 1956 and attended Santa Clara University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in political science in 1960. He then attended Santa Clara University School of Law, where he earned a law degree in 1963. Panetta served in the U.S. Army from 1964 to 1966, and then worked as a legislative assistant to U.S. Representative Burt Talcott from 1967 to 1969. He then served as a deputy attorney general in the California Department of Justice from 1969 to 1971. In 1977, Panetta was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, representing California's 16th congressional district. He served in the House until 1993, when he was appointed director of the Office of Management and Budget by President Bill Clinton. He served in that position until 1994, when he was appointed chief of staff to the president. He served in that position until 1997. In 2009, President Barack Obama appointed Panetta as director of the Central Intelligence Agency. He served in that position until 2011, when he was appointed Secretary of Defense. He served in that position until 2013. Panetta is currently a professor at the Panetta Institute for Public Policy at California State University, Monterey Bay. He is also a senior counselor at the law firm of Panetta, Thompson & Vizzi.
